The short answer is no: in San Diego, as in the rest of California, Medi-Cal generally does not pay the monthly rent at a sober living home. Sober living is housing, not medical care, so it is usually paid privately. What Medi-Cal can help with is the separate treatment and support services you may be using while you live in sober living, such as outpatient care through a covered provider.
At Pacific Beach Recovery, sober living is a private-pay arrangement. We say that plainly because the most expensive surprise in early recovery is the one nobody warned you about. This guide walks through what that means for you in San Diego, who to ask about help, and how to put together a realistic plan.
For the longer statewide explanation, read our guide on whether Medi-Cal pays for sober living in California. This article focuses on the practical San Diego steps.

Why Sober Living Rent Is Usually Private-Pay
A sober living home is a substance-free shared residence. Residents follow house rules, take part in drug and alcohol testing and live alongside peers who are also in recovery. What a sober living home does not do is provide clinical treatment.
Health coverage, including Medi-Cal, is built to pay for health care services. Rent for a room in a recovery home falls on the housing side of that line. That is why most sober living homes, including ours, ask residents to pay rent directly, sometimes with help from family, savings or income from work.
If a home tells you Medi-Cal will simply cover your rent, ask them to explain exactly how, and get it in writing. It is a fair question, and a trustworthy home will answer it clearly.
What Medi-Cal May Help With While You Live in Sober Living
Being in sober living does not mean you give up your health coverage. Many people keep using Medi-Cal for the parts of recovery that are health care, while paying rent separately. Depending on your plan and your needs, that may include:
- Substance use disorder services through Medi-Cal providers in San Diego County. California runs these services through the Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System in participating counties. Your plan or county can tell you which programs are covered and near you.
- Mental health care, if you are also working on anxiety, depression or another condition.
- Primary care and prescriptions from your regular doctor.
A common setup looks like this: you live in a structured sober living home and attend an outpatient program or appointments during the week. The home gives you a stable, substance-free place to live, and your providers give you the clinical care. We are not a treatment provider, but living somewhere steady can make it easier to keep those appointments.
How Sober Living and Your Outpatient Care Fit Together
Paying for housing and paying for care are separate, but the two work best when they stay connected. Pacific Beach Recovery does not provide therapy or clinical care. What we do is work closely with nearby outpatient programs and discharge therapists so your move from treatment into the house feels like one plan rather than two.
In practice, that coordination can include:
- Nearby, aligned outpatient programs. We have relationships with outpatient programs in the area, which helps residents keep attending care close to home.
- Continuity in what you are learning. House expectations are meant to support the same recovery skills you are practicing in your program.
- Shared awareness of testing. Our drug and alcohol testing is coordinated so your outpatient team is not working from a different picture than the house.
- Communication with your clinical team. With your consent, house management can stay in touch with your therapist or program about how you are doing.

Who to Ask in San Diego
Coverage details change and depend on your plan, so the best information will come from the people who administer it. Here are the places to start.
Your Medi-Cal managed care plan
Call the member services number on your plan card. Ask two direct questions:
- “Which substance use and mental health services are covered for me, and which providers are near Pacific Beach?”
- “Do I qualify for any Community Supports related to housing?”
California lists a set of optional Community Supports that managed care plans may offer. Whether a plan offers a given support, and whether you qualify, varies. Asking by name saves time.
San Diego County Behavioral Health Services
The county’s Behavioral Health Services page is the local starting point for mental health and substance use care. The county tells residents to call 988 for immediate help and referrals. If you are not in crisis but need to understand local options, the site’s Services A-Z is a good place to browse.
County Medi-Cal eligibility
If your Medi-Cal is not active, or you recently moved to San Diego, check your status first. The county’s Medi-Cal program page and the state’s Apply for Medi-Cal page explain how to apply or update your information. If you moved counties, make sure your case is transferred so you can use local providers.
How People Usually Budget for Sober Living
Because rent is typically private-pay, most residents combine a few sources. None of these is guaranteed, but they are the ones worth exploring.
Work income
Many residents work while living in sober living. Pacific Beach and the surrounding area have plenty of service, hospitality and retail jobs, and a steady schedule supports recovery too. Our article on getting back to work in recovery covers how to approach it.
Family support
Some families help with the first month or two while a resident finds work. If that is your situation, talk openly about how long the help will last and what the plan is after that. Clear expectations prevent resentment later.
Savings and planning ahead
If you are still in treatment, use that time to plan. Ask the home about move-in costs, what rent includes and the payment schedule, then work backward. Knowing the number before discharge removes a lot of stress.
Asking about assistance programs
Your plan, your county and your treatment team may know of local programs that help with housing costs for people in recovery. Availability changes, so ask directly rather than assuming something exists or does not.
Questions to Ask Any Sober Living Home About Cost
Before you commit, ask each home the same questions so you can compare honestly:
- What is the monthly rent, and what does it include?
- Are there move-in fees or deposits?
- When is rent due, and what happens if a payment is late?
- Does the home accept any insurance or Medi-Cal for rent? If yes, how exactly?
- Are drug and alcohol tests included in the rent?
Straight answers to these questions are a good sign. Vague answers are worth noting.
